GREEK LUXURY AT MYKONOS THEOXENIA BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Our first time in Mykonos was met like a surprise piece of birthday cake. You already know its going to happen but its not until your first bite that you truly realise you are in paradise. We have seen so many photographs of this Greek island and every single one of them lived up to its reputation plus more.

Our first week was spent at the Mykonos Theoxenia Boutique Hotel, which is a luxurious Greek hotel in what can only be described as being in the best possible location on the island, right behind the iconic Mykonos Windmills.

Checking in: Mykonos Theoxenia Boutique Hotel

Just about everyone will tell you that the real beauty of Greece lies in the islands and a short flight out of Athens will quickly get you to a slice of said beauty. Opting in for the earliest flight was so worth it as we witnessed an incredible sunrise upon landing into the Mykonos International Airport.

Walking through the arrival doors at this tiny airport we were pleasantly surprised to have a transfer waiting for us at just after 6:40 in the morning.

Our drive into the hotel was met with white buildings, pink skies and my mouth literally dropping when I saw our driver turning into the hotel entrance right behind the iconic Mykonos windmills. We had heard of its convenient location but it's not till you see the magic trick that is their excellently placed front entrance.

There is no doubt that Theoxenia has the most ideal location in all of the island. Plus - a hotel will always receive brownie points from us if we are able to check into our room and offered breakfast at 7am in the morning.

The Location

If you are looking for a resort that has incredible grounds as well as being in the heart of Mykonos Old Town, than Theoxenia is the place for you. We spent every single morning awake at 6am as we rolled out of bed and took just a few steps out of the grounds to be greeted by the stunning sunrise over Old Town.

The resort is honestly an unbelievable size in comparison to properties around the island and especially those in the Old Town area. When you walk around the island and notice buildings, built upon buildings right next door to more buildings, you can really appreciate just how much space Theoxenia has for its guests.

The front end garden is long enough to ensure you don't hear the parties and noise coming from the late nights in Old Town and with ample parking on site, you can easily rent a car or ATV like we did, explore the island and not worry about trying to find a spot to park amongst the hundreds of scooters and cars out the front.

We cannot stress enough, this hotel absolutely has the best location in all of Mykonos!

The breakfast to beat all breakfasts

Every morning after our walks through the town, watching the sun slowly rise about the hills we would eagerly cut our time short to return to one of the best breakfast buffets we have had since our time in the Maldives.

Three large serving tables at The Plate Restaurant were covered in just about every single breakfast item you could want with a hot plate that rotated throughout the week with new choices to make your breakfast decision even harder. Top that with a separate a la carte menu, you could just roll back into bed after a sudden food coma.

Our mornings would rotate between some fresh Greek yoghurt topped with berries and granola as a side to our boiled eggs, haloumi and at least 2 rounds of fresh coffee. Writing this post is already bringing back cravings.

With our upcoming family wedding just a week away, we spent "date night" at the restaurant and were treated to a Greek salad, a seafood dinner that ended in chocolate pudding for dessert. It may not have been the best decision for our wedding diet but it was the best decision for the taste factor.

That Pool

The grounds of the Theoxenia is one of its biggest selling points. You could easily spend hours in the pool, watching the world go by with a fresh cocktail in hand. Being placed right on the cliffside you are already in the best spot to sit back and watch the sunset.

The Room

We were greeted to those navy blue doors the island is known for alongside an exposed featured stone wall which complimented the white look of our room. If you are looking for an authentic Greek but still luxurious stay, I think we may have found it.

Unfortunately, when you walk through that beautiful blue door is when you start to feel a little bit let down on the whole Theoxenia experience. Our classic double room garden view with breakfast came in at just over €550 ($830AUD) per night and for that we expected just a little bit more.

The room came with a comfortable double bed, fast WiFi, air conditioning (which was a lifesaver in the Greece heat), tea & coffee facilities as well as locally sourced amenities inside your bathroom. Everything you can expect was present, but that's the thing, you just expect more than what is expected to match the higher price tag.

Our Experience

As always we film everything we get up to on our travel adventures. If you want to see a room and hotel tour and also what we got up to – check out our video below and make sure you head on over and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

You can book a Classic Double Room for around AUD$800 a night.

Flying The Nest was welcomed as a guest of Mykonos Theoxenia, however as always all opinions are our own.
