THROWING A DART AT A MAP AND FLYING WHEREVER IT LANDS
We are both lovers of spontaneous travel. We are talking the kind of travel where you rock up at the airport with no idea where you are going (and yes we filmed that entire trip too if you wanted to check it out!)
So, a few weeks ago we took our spontaneous travel ideas to a whole new level and put our fate in the hands of our 1-year-old by letting her decide our next travel destination. And she wasn’t just going to pick where we would go, but also where we would stay and what we would do.
So, with a print-out map of the United States and a magnetic dartboard, we let Hunter choose our next trip!
And what did she choose?
Well, Hunter’s dart landed on the great state of Texas! San Antonio, Texas, to be exact.
And we couldn’t be happier. Not only did she choose a destination we’ve never been to, but it was also going to be incredibly sunny and warm. It was just the break we needed from the dreary cold February we had been having.
So, we booked a flight for the following day to Austin (via San Diego), where we would rent a car to continue our way to San Antonio.

Where We Stayed
Before we arrived, we needed to decide on a hotel. Well, actually Hunter was the one who had to make the choice. We rigged up a mini “Wheel of Odds” with eight different accommodation options, ranging from $50 for a 1-star hotel to a $750 a night 5-star hotel.
She gave the wheel a spin and landed on, of course, Hotel Emma, the most expensive option! Thankfully, we could shop around and find a discount for just $476 a night.
The hotel itself was absolutely gorgeous, with a prime spot right on the banks of the San Antonio River. It was originally used as a brewhouse in the late 1800s, so it’s a historic landmark and one of the best hotels in the city!
What To Do in San Antonio
After starting our morning with room service-delivered coffee, we were ready to tackle the best sights of San Antonio. We found the top 10 activities in the city and wrote them down on little balls for Hunter to draw out of a bag.
Her first pick was a winner! We were going to explore the San Antonio River Walk. We strolled along the river admiring the quaint shops, restaurants, and gorgeous architecture that lined the banks.
Hunter’s next pick was Market Square, an outdoor plaza rich with Mexican history and culture. We explored the shops, indulging in authentic street tacos, and had delicious fruity margaritas by the water.
The next day, Hunter drew the ball for Six Flags, an amusement park on the outskirts of the city. If rollercoasters and heart-dropping log rides are your things, then this is a must-see when visiting San Antonio!
Our mystery vacation to Texas was a blast. San Antonio is a city bursting with life, with plenty of sights and attractions for all types of travellers. Sometimes, you just need to be a little spontaneous to venture to destinations you would never usually pick yourself!
