Where to go Backcountry Camping?
We booked a trip with Temagami Outfitting Co., who bravely took us out into the snowy landscape of eastern Ontario. The campground is located deep within the forest, which you can reach by a snowshoeing trail.
Where You’ll Stay
During your back camping adventure, you’ll be sleeping inside a tent. Although you’re surrounded by snow (there’s no floor in the tent), the birchwood branches, fur blankets, and stove will keep you nice and toasty all night.
In addition to your sleeping quarters, there’s also a cosy dining tent where you’ll have shared meals. It’s also the main hang-out area for socializing with your guide. Unfortunately, there is no "bathroom" per se, although the forest provides enough privacy when business calls.
What You’ll Do
The best thing about camping is that you have an entire outdoor world to explore. You can spend your afternoon snowshoeing, sledding, or just having a plain ole fashioned snowball fight! Temagami Outfitting Co. can also take you ice fishing if you want to try your hand at catching dinner!
At night, you’ll retreat to the dining tent for a delicious homecooked meal complete with hot drinks and sweet treats. It’s such an amazing experience to talk with the guides and to hear their stories of living in this unique part of the world. Then it’s time to get some shut-eye and wake up early to get a fresh start on the day.
What to Expect
First of all, it will be cold. We’re talking, really, really cold. You're in the Canadian wilderness, after all! Therefore, it's crucial to dress warm and to come prepared with everything you'll need for your stay. But don't worry – your tent at night will be toasty warm, just like your bedroom back at home!
But keep in mind you are in the middle of nature. There aren’t any shops or restaurants nearby, and there’s definitely no electricity or internet. But being able to disconnect from the outside world is something we all should do more often!
If you book a tour with Temagami Outfitting Co., then your winter camping gear will be provided. They'll also provide a packing list to ensure you are equipped for a night outdoors.
Is it Worth It?
Absolutely! Winter camping in the backcountry of Canada was an unbelievable experience. And although you’re miles away from the civilization or the nearest town, it wasn't as difficult as we thought. And we did it with a 1-year-old in tow too. So, if you're looking for a unique experience that brings you closer to Mother Nature, consider spending a night in the Temagami wilderness.
