24 HOURS IN AGRA | EVERYTHING TO SEE & DO
Agra is a must visit during a trip to India and there are just so many wonderful things to do here. On our travels through India with On The Go Tours we had 24 hours to explore Agra, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.
If you want to see everything we got up to here in Agra check out our YouTube video below, and keep scrolling for extra details and snaps from our visit.
1. Sunset at the Taj Mahal
You can't come to Agra without a visit to the Taj Mahal, and once you see it for yourself you will understand why more than 7 million people come to the Taj every year. It truly is a breathtaking sight to see.
The Taj Mahal took 16 years to complete, finished in 1648 as a mausoleum for Mumatz Mahal, the wife of the emperor. The emperor spent 32 million rupees on construction, which is the equivalent of 827 million dollars today! This is clearly shown in the beauty and elaborate carvings and decoration found here.
Entrance price: 1100 INR + 200 INR to visit main mausoleum
2. Snap Photos at Agra Fort
Agra Fort is a stunning UNESCO world heritage monument, constructed from red sandstone, it is one of the finest Mughal forts in all of India. This fort has quite the interesting history, it was first used as a military fort before being transformed into a palace until it ended up as a place of imprisonment.
The fort is incredibly photogenic. We loved spending the morning here, exploring the walls & snapping a bunch of photos.
Entrance fee: 550 INR
3. Go Shopping at Sadar Bazaar
If you are looking for a spot to go shopping we suggest checking out Sadar Bazaar. Here you will find a strip of shops selling all kinds of souvenirs. There is also a number of restaurants and street food stalls where you can try some local dishes.
3. Explore Fatehpur Sikri
Located 40km west of Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is a city that was once the capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. In now stands as a deserted well-preserved ghost town, abandoned by its occupants only after 15 years due to an insufficient water supply. Just like Agra Fort, it also was constructed from red sandstone and a stunning place for photography.
Entrance fee: 550 INR
4. Visit the Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulad... aka Baby Taj Mahal
This mausoleum is often described as the baby Taj and is said to be used as a draft complex of the Taj Mahal. Just like the Taj, it is a beautiful symmetrical building, with towers and a long pool leading up to the tomb. Also, just like the Taj - no tripods are allowed inside.
Entrance fee: 210 INR
6. Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Remember, this is one of the wonders of the world so you must wake up for sunrise to see it all again. During the early hours the colours of the sky shining on the magnificent structure is simply breathtaking. The Taj Mahal opens at 6am, but you want to get here much earlier to grab your ticket and get a good spot in line.
We were surprised by how busy it gets so early in the morning, so we suggest once you enter head straight to the sides of the Taj where you can epic shots through the door frames from the surrounding buildings
