7 TRAVEL APPS YOU NEED FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP TO EUROPE
If someone were to ask us if there is one thing we would never travel without - our answer would have to be our phone! These days you can book hotels, purchase flights, look up restaurants, take and edit photographs and plan an itinerary all from a device that can be carried around in your pocket!
Planning a trip to Europe this summer? Here are 7 travel apps you need to download ASAP onto your phone to have a smooth & stress-free epic trip!
1. Google Translate
We're pretty certain that everyone knows about the amazing app Google Translate, but did you know the free app can also do two-way speech translations as well as photo translations? Imagine being able to sit down with a local and have a conversation without speaking the same language! The photo translation part of the app is super helpful when you go out to eat as you can simply hover your phone over the foreign language and it translate's the menu back to you in English!
We also recommend to download language packs for offline use, which is really convenient for those moments that you don’t have Wi-Fi access while roaming the streets of a foreign country.
2. Rail Planner Eurail/Interail
This app was the holy grail for us during our last trip to Europe. The Rail Planner App allows travellers to look up train information (such as seat selection, departure and arrival times, connecting platforms, city maps, nearest train station, etc.), no matter where they are, as the app is available offline! It’s also possible to book train journeys directly via the app, for on the go planning and decisions.
3. Spotted by Locals
Spotted by Locals features offline guides of 55 European cities that are created entirely by locals! Each city guide provides locally recommended spots for music, art, culture, shopping, snacks, coffee, bars, places to relax - you name it, they've got you covered. Recommendations are handpicked hotspots and always trendy and cool at the moment. Each city guide is available for €3.59 & the price also includes free updates for life.
4. Uber
We would be shocked if you haven't heard of Uber, but many people don't think about using Uber when they are travelling in a foreign country. Uber is super useful for getting around town and traveling to and from the airport. Simply request a ride on the app and a driver will arrive momentarily to take you to where you want to go. Something we love is that there’s no local currency required since the ride will be charged to the credit card stored in your account, and you won’t have to explain to your driver in a foreign language where you’re headed.
If you haven’t signed up for Uber yet, you can join here, download the app and get your first ride free (up to $20).
5. The Fork
If you have travelling to Europe before than you would know that in many European cities in can be quite tricky to find a meal that isn't going to completely empty out your pockets. If you are after an affordable European getaway while still eating delicious food, this free app is perfect for you. The Fork not only helps you select the best restaurants around, but also gives you discounts (sometimes up to 50% off). Each spot features reviews, photos, a map and example menu items so you can find the perfect restaurant for whatever you’re in the mood for.
6. MetrO
We have all been there. Standing there, staring at a subway map having no clue on what to do. You need to down download the MetrO app to your phone which will give you subway directions in more than 400 cities worldwide. And once you’ve downloaded the app, you don’t need to be connected to a network - always a win, win for us!
7. Wi-Fi Finder
A top tip when travelling is to turn off roaming on your phone - unless you want to be hit with hefty roaming charges. Instead download the Wi-Fi Finder app to help you find nearby Wi-Fi location. Whether you want to order an uber, look up a good restaurant, or update your Insta with an epic travel shot, this app will be your life saver!
Now on to you - What app could you not live without when travelling Europe?
