CHECKING INTO THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK: CICADA LODGE

Checking into the Cicada Lodge, Katherine

Situated in the sanctuary of Nitmiluk National Park with the sounds of nature and views of the iconic Katherine Gorge you know you have arrived at a luxurious resort from the moment you walk through reception.

Located 300km south of Darwin and a half hour drive out of the town centre of Katherine with minimal phone reception and not a bar or club for miles - you come here to switch off and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Katherine Gorge.

Seeing Australia's History

Upon arrival we were greeted and welcomed to Cicada Lodge by the Jawoyn people, who are the traditional owners and managers of the Nitmiluk National Park, lodge and tours who will ensure you will experience Australia's Indigenous culture.

If you are after a luxurious indigenous cultural experience in one of Australia's most iconic national parks, situated just off the Katherine Gorge in a lodge that is owned by the local aboriginals - then this is place for you!

A Personalised Catered Experience

With the ever growing adaption of specialised dietary requirements it was no issue for the Chef to provide us both with our own personalised vegan menu. We thoroughly enjoyed tasting his course creations made from locally sourced ingredients.

If you are after a more contemporary approach to dinner don't worry the Chef will have a unique experience just for you and inspired by the region. Want to try something a bit different? Guests travelling with us enjoyed trying crocodile for the first time!

The Room: A Luxury Eco Resort in the Middle of Nowhere

Tourists flock to the Northern Territory and the region of Katherine to find the cultural significance of the aboriginal people as well as to get lost and find themselves. Upon arrival we were escorted to our room which contained brown and sandstone colours to compliment the area.

As we were at a luxury resort it came as no surprise to be greeted with luxury bath amenities, a wide selection of tea's and coffees as well as robes, a working desk and a very comfortable bed. Also don't worry - each of the 18 lodges are equiped with aircon to keep you cool during the days and at night.

The highlight certainly was the views of the outback seen through our private balcony of the lush native bushland. One morning we even woke up to see a wallaby casually stroll past the walkway - this is the real Australia.

How to make the most of your time:

Unless you came here to simply drink wine and eat great food (which still sounds like an amazing holiday) then we highly recommend you book a package or tour to see the beautiful surrounding area.

You can easily speak to one of the staff at the front desk to get you on a package that is catered for your needs. Wether you are looking for an adventure helicopter ride, dinner cruise or a cultural experience, we suggest you add these to your stay as they will add that special touch to your trip.

Our Final Thoughts

It's rare that a lodge also provides an experience. We left Cicada Lodge with a a newfound knowledge of both the area, the Jawoyn people and Australia's history. The food and the views were a highlight, waking up every morning to the sunrising over the gorge was a sight we will never forget.

You can book a Cicada Lodge Bed & Breakfast per couple per night for $616AUD including sunset drinks, evening canapes and a continental breakfast.

Thanks to Tourism Northern Territory for kindly inviting Flying the Nest to experience Cicada Lodge. As always, all opinions are our own.
