9 BOOKS THAT INSPIRE MAJOR WANDERLUST

As we are currently on a year long journey around the globe I thought I would share with you the books that have inspired me to pack up and hit the road.

1. The Beach by Alex Garland

This backpacking novel is set in Thailand following the story of a young backpacker's search for a legendary, idyllic and isolated beach untouched by tourism. We can really identify with the characters quest to do something a little different and get off the beaten path. Don't we all want to find that piece of untouched paradise?

2. The Wander Year: One Couple's Journey Around the World by Mike McIntyre

As we are a couple travelling together this book really got to us. The Wander Year follows couple Mikeand Andrea as they put their life on hold and lieu of travelling the world (sound familiar?). The couple share stories of travel mishaps, people they meet along the way and what it is like navigating a relationship while on the road.

3. The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost: A Memoir of Three Continents, Two Friends, And One Unexpected Adventure by Rachel Friedman

This story really emphasises the idea that a life of travel and adventure is possible for anyone. The memoir is about Rachel, the "good girl" who has always stuck by the rules and does everything right, until she decides to go and spend a summer in Ireland at the age of 20 - freaking her parents out!

The reader gets taken across three continents as she befriends an Australian girl who allows Rachel to realise that the standard 9-5 American isn't so standard. This book really spoke out to us and re-enforced our belief that working 9-5 is no longer the norm.

4. On the Road by Jack Kerouac

This autobiography shares the story of vagabonds as they travel around the country. The central theme is about getting away and simply living through travel - an idea we are now embracing.

5. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

One of my favourite books, Wild is a first-person memoir of Cheryl's 1,100 mile hike along the Pacific Crest Travel from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to the border with Washington State. Along with her journey the book contains flash backs to prior life occurrences that led her to begin her mountain-climbing journey. The book has recently been realised as a movie, which is also amazing!

6. A Woman Alone: Travel Tales from Around the Globe by Faith Conlon

The idea of a journey without companions is too daunting for most travellers, however not for the women in this book. This book is a collection of stories from solo travellers who tell their funny, crazy and at times terrifying stories of navigating some of the most unusual destination on the globe.

8. Wanderlust: A Love Affair with Five Continents by Elisabeth Eaves

Wanderlust documents Elisabeth's 15 years of travel. Young and independent, she crosses over 5continents and chases both culture and romance. Overall, I felt this book was a journey of self-discovery and an inspiring read.

9. The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World by Jennifer Baggett, Holly Corbett & Amanda Pressner

This story follows three twentysomethings who are all at crossroads. They decide to do something daring and quit their jobs, leave everything behind to travel the globe. Dubbing themselves the Lost Girls, they embark on an epic yearlong search of inspiration and direction.  This book has been one of my favourite reads this year!
