THE BIG KAHUNA LUAU

How could we not go to Hawaii without attending a traditional Hawaiian luau?

Big Kahuna Luau

The Big Kahuna Luau is held at the Honolulu Ridge on a beautiful 1920's estate nestled in the hills of Tantalus in Oahu. As we entered the property we were faced with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Diamond Head, Oahu's spectacular southern coast line and Wakiki Beach, as the sun began to set.

What is a luau, you ask? A luau is a traditional Hawaiian party or feast that is often accompanied by entertainment. It usually features foods such as kalua pig, poke, salmon, beer and entertainment including traditional Hawaiian music and of course hula dancing.

We were greeted by smiling locals who presented us with leis and a cheeky mai tai. Before the feast began they had a number of activities going on around the property, so make sure you get there early. We were able to experience lei making, traditional Hawaiian dance lessons, ukulele lessons, coconut leaf plaiting ...

and of course, a group lesson in hula dancing.

Once the dinner was ready, the shell was blown and it was time to grab a plate, pile on some amazing food and find your spot ready for the entertainment to begin.

The food was delicious, we especially loved the steamed coconut jasmine rice and of course dessert, which was a haupia layer cake with toasted coconut - YUM! Even though the food was amazing, the entertainment was even better.

We were brought back in time and became immersed in the traditional Hawaiian culture as they wove history and story telling into the performances. We were shown hula through the years, starting from the traditional times right up to glamourised Hollywood hula.

We highly recommend if you find yourself in Oahu to experience The Big Kahuna Luau with Discovery Hawaii Tours. The location is unreal, along with the service, food and entertainment. Even better, it is all you can drink which is a lovely perk.  The ambiance and authenticity shown through the activities and show made it for our most memorable evening during our time on the island.
