HOW TO USE PINTEREST FOR TRAVEL PLANNING

1. So what is Pinterest? (The Basics)

You may of heard of it but you aren't exactly sure how it works. Well in a nutshell you 'pin' photographs onto boards about specific topics or interests. You can then follow other boards, share your own boards or create private boards. Just look at it as your own personal scrapboard.

2. How to use Pinterest (The Basics)

There are a few ways to use Pinterest, you can upload a photograph, enter in the URL of a photograph or if you use Google Chrome as your browser you can download an easy plugin which will allow an easy hover over pin button. Once you hit pin, you pick or create a board and write a description of the photograph.

3. Start Broad Then Become Specific (The Basics)

Start with a location, so if you want to visit Paris create a board called Paris and start pinning everything from locations to activities, things to do and accommodation. Once you have found everything you need to do it may look a bit cluttered, so why not break it up into new boards and create 'things to do in Paris', 'where to eat in Paris', 'shopping in Paris' etc.

4. Start following boards for inspiration (Inspiration)

So you think you have found everything to do in Paris, guess again there is probably more to do than you thought to do. So why not follow some Pinterest boards from travel bloggers to help inspire you.

5. Search for Travel pins (Inspiration)

The search bar on Pinterest is very prominent, it stretches straight across the home screen edging you on to use it. So why not search for some keywords like "things to do in Barcelona" for example. You will find a lot of popular travel pins to easily help fill out your own boards.

6. Head to the Travel category (Inspiration)

Speaking of the search bar, did you notice the three lines just next to it? Click it to bring up a list of categories and head to the travel section for a list of travel related pins.

7. Find Photographs from outside of Pinterest (Inspiration)

Not sure where to look? Why not find some travel blogs (like the one you're on right now!), head to Flickr and 500px or visit the websites for tourism boards. Most of the time you will find beautiful photographs of locations. This is also a great way to find the best places to get your travel shots.

8. Follow Friends (Get Social)

So you have your boards and you're ready to show them off. Why not connect your Facebook and Twitter account to see what friends are already on Pinterest. All you have to do is head to your account settings followed by social accounts and then you can connect them up.

9. Get Your Friends Involved (Get Social)

A great way to build out boards and encourage collaboration is to invite your friends to pin on your boards. This is known as a group board and is a great way to get travel advice from friends. Just head to a board, click edit board and then type your friends name or email in. Once they have accepted you can start working together on creating the perfect Paris travel board.

10. Add Location Pins

Location pins are fairly new and have been around for the last year. They were designed with travel boards in mind and completely change the layout of your board. When creating a board click add a map or if you want to change an older board click edit board then add a map.
