EXPLORING FORTS IN ST KITTS

Whilst exploring the green, luscious island of St Kitts we came across a large fortress. Once entering we found we had stepped into a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Brimestone Hill Fortress National Park and what a beautiful location it was in. The stunning 38 acre fortress dates back to the 18th century but still in near perfect condition. It is positioned on a very steep, 240 meter high, ancient volcano called Brimestone Hill, which the fortress is named after.

The fortress is the second largest in the Caribbean. It serves as a monument to the British military engineers who designed it, as well as the endurance and skill of the African slaves who built it. It was built over a hundred years between 1690 and 1790. It has superb views in every direction, with a number of other islands able to be seen in the distance. Brimetsone Hill's panoramic is a photographer's paradise.

We spent our time exploring the ruins of the Royal Engineers' Quarters, the Artillery Officers' Quarters, Infantry Officers' Quarters, the Orillon Bastion and even the ruins of the barracks.
