  1. Have A Soak at the Julia Creek Artesian Baths

Definitely one of our most relaxing experiences yet; the Julia Creek Artesian Baths were absolutely lovely. We weren't expecting to find a luxurious activity like this in Outback Queensland, especially at a caravan park! The luxurious baths maintain a temperature of 38-41°C and are mixed with healing salts like calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. Soaking in a warm and soothing bath in the wilderness is the perfect activity after a long day of driving!

2. Enjoy A Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Australia’s Largest Salt Pan

When heading to Outback Queensland you can not miss the very unique experience of taking a hot air balloon ride over Australia’s largest salt pan. This tour is offered by Yagurli Tours and Balloon Aloft, whose hot air balloon ride took us over the Albert River and the largest salt pan in Australia! The entirety of the flight was surreal and mind-blowing but getting to know about the history of Burketown through Garwana and Gangalidda people mid-flight made the experience extra special!

3. Stand up Paddle Boarding through Cobbold Gorge

Before we’d even set off for Outback Queensland, we’d heard a lot about the Cobbold Gorge’s beauty, so we couldn’t wait to explore the allure of the canyon. We booked Stephen a guided paddleboarding tour of the gorge to celebrate Fathers Day and we highly recommend this tour!

Cobbold Gorge is a little slice of heaven here in the outback. There was something extremely calming as you pass through the creeks of the gorge and pass by little crocs sunbathing along the water’s edge.

The Cobbold Gorge Caravan Park is also an amazing spot to spend a night or two. They have a beautiful infinity, amazing food and drinks and you can grab a kayak for free and head out onto the nearby creek to spot some crocs.

4. Explore and Bathe in the Talaroo Hot Springs

Already having taken a relaxing bath in Julia Creek Artesian Baths, we couldn’t wait to drive back in after reading to the geothermal Talaroo Hot Springs.

Formed over millions of years, Talaroo Hot Springs are a unique spot here in Australia. With water discharging at a scorching 62°C and flowing into pools and terraces it is a stunning spot to explore. We enjoyed a private tour with a local guide, which ended with us soaking in our own hot spring bath.

5. Hike Through One of the Longest Lava Tube Systems in the World

You can not miss a hike through the Undara Volcanic Nature Park, home to one of the longest lava tube systems in the world! Descending into the lava tube suddenly made us feel modest in comparison to the immense height of the caves. We hiked through the tube, crossing the caves, some of which were covered with overgrown ivy and home to microbats.

Undara is also an amazing spot to spend a couple of nights. They have a bunch of unique accommodations, from glamping tents to railway carriage rooms! We also highly recommend heading to their Bush breakfast were you can enjoy an outdoor breakie enjoying coffee straight from the billy and cooking your own toast on the open fire!
