THE PERFECT 9 DAY SOUTH AUSTRALIA ROAD TRIP
When little Hunter turned nine months old, we were ready to head on an interstate adventure with her. We decided the best place to start would be South Australia! It's only a short flight from Perth, and there were areas of SA that we had yet to explore for ourselves.
South Australia really has it all! From the red outback adventures to the crystal blue coastline and the stunning vineyards in between, this is a spot in Australia that we are here to convince you to visit.
So here is our ultimate 9-day road trip itinerary when heading to South Australia!
9-Day South Australia Itinerary
Day 1 – 4: Flinders Ranges
Our first stop on our South Australia adventure was Flinders Ranges. We hired a 4x4 once we landed in Adelaide and embarked on the 5-hour drive to the Ranges. It was a stunning ride along ancient cliffs and deep craters along dusty red roads. Even though the ride was long, it was full of fantastic views of the Outback.
Scenic Flight
In the morning, we went on a scenic flight over the Ranges. It was also Hunter's first time on a tiny plane and was adorable seeing her chubby cheeks squeezed up against her headset! The flight gave us fantastic views over Wilpena Pound with the colours changing from reds to greens as the sun slowly rose.

Stokes Hill Lookout for Sunset
As the day drew to a close, we headed out to a breathtaking lookout point, Stokes Hill Lookout, to enjoy an outback sunset. We set up a cute little family picnic and watched as the sunset on an amazing day in the Ranges.
Go Off-Roading
If you love off-roading, you can take the Ikara scenic off-road drive for lots of amazing photo opportunities! We loved the off-road trails in Flinders Ranges.
Where We Stayed
During our time in Flinders Ranges, we stayed at the Ikara Safari Camp. The glamping experience was super unique, with our tent fully equipped with an ensuite bathroom, a luxe King bed, air conditioning and our very own private deck and fire pit.
Day 5 – 6: McLaren Vale Wine Country
Wine, wine and more wine
If you are a wine lover you can not miss McLaren Vale Wine Country on your South Australia road trip! We highly recommend having a picnic and some delicious wine at Down the Rabbit Hole Wines. Here you can do wine tasting inside a turquoise double-decker bus and say hello to the friendly resident alpacas.
Where We Stayed
If you are looking for a unique tiny home experience next to the vineyards you need to stay in a CABN tiny home. We spent the night in Mila, and it is the perfect tiny home for small families, built on a working winery.

Day 6 – 9: Fleurieu Peninsula
It is only a little more than an hour from Adelaide before you arrive in the coastal playground of South Australia. The Fleurieu Peninsula has some of the best beaches, and it is also only minutes away from some world-famous restaurants and multi-award-winning wineries.
Port Willunga Beach for Sunset
Out of all the beaches we have seen, this is hands down our favourite in all of South Australia. We watched the sunset from our very own little cave overlooking the ocean. It is truly one of the most magnificent beaches the Fleurieu Peninsula has to offer.
Sellicks Beach
A close second to Port Willunga, Sellicks Beach was also a perfect spot to watch the sunset. This time, we sat on the cliffs and overlooked the ocean.
Where We Stayed
To stay close to the stunning turquoise water, we found a fantastic beach house on Airbnb next to the sea, The Landing at Alginda Beach. This beautiful 1960’s beach house is absolutely breathtaking, with your very own balcony overlooking the ocean!
