LIVING IN A HOUSEBOAT ON CORROBOREE BILLABONG
Earlier this year we set off on our biggest adventure yet! We converted a Sprinter van into our very own family home on wheels.
Cruising through Australia has been as exciting as promised; getting to traverse the wild outbacks along long, dusty roads is an adventure we will never forget. Along the way, we have been on the looked out for unique experiences we never knew Australia had to offer and the Northern Territory was full of them!
We recently spent two nights living in our very own houseboat along the Corroboree Billabong. We woke up to birds catching their morning fish and crocodiles swimming through the nearby lilypads. It really is a must do when heading to this part of Australia!
If you are busy planning your next Australian getaway, we are here to convince you why living on your own Corroboree Houseboat is a must do experience! Check out our YouTube video below of our time aboard the houseboat and keep scrolling for more info!

Corroberree Houseboats
Located in the Northern Territory’s protected nature reserve Kakadu, a wide section of Mary River Wetlands is made up by the Corroboree Billabong, which is the place to go if you are looking for untouched flora and fauna.
Our storeyed houseboat was pretty spacious; it had two bedrooms, a balcony, two separate bunk beds, a fully-stocked kitchen, a complete bathroom, a comfortable patio with a sitting area, dining table, barbecue, and overall enough room for baby Hunter to enjoy.
Sleeping along the billabong, you definitely felt like you were out in the middle of nature. To keep animals, birds, and insects away, a retractable netting was built on all open ends of the houseboat, which meant zero mozzies for us! The cherry on top? We had enough water to easily last two days, and the boat was solar-powered, so we didn’t have to fuss about water and gas issues.
Steering the Houseboat
Now, we weren’t sure exactly how a houseboat works, but thankfully, the friendly team at Corroboree Houseboats explained to us the basics.. and the best bit - you don’t need your skipper’s licence!
After checking in (which was really just stocking the kitchen and boarding our luggage in the bedroom), we decided to up-anchor the houseboat and took turns steering the boat, which was surprisingly easy.
Our Experience
Day One
Our first half of day one was spent boating in the water and passing through the beautiful greenery on both sides while our little munchkin entertained herself by peering for crocodiles in the water. Before dark, we anchored our houseboat in a serene part of the Billabong and cooked sausage sizzles for dinner. The best part was witnessing a breath-taking sunset, which made our dinner tastier than ever. We slept like a log and woke up fresh, waiting for an exciting day ahead.
Day Two
We decided to go off the Billabong and explore the Mary River, which was an equally prettier place, and after anchoring the boat near cute lily pads, we spent our last day spotting crocs, enjoying an afternoon cheese platter, and watching one of the most incredible sunsets we have seen on our travels through Australia.
The two days went by quicker than we’d ever imagined, but the whole experience left us inspired and in awe; we had conquered our hesitation of boating and are now looking forward to newer experiences.
If you’re looking to experience something super unique here in the Australia Outback, we definitely recommend renting out a houseboat. And this experience is open to all; whether you’re planning a friends’ trip, a romantic getaway, or need somewhere to vacation with your family, houseboating on the Corroboree Billabong needs to be on your list!
