Top 10 Foods to Try
1. Nagori Halwa
Nagori Halwa is one of the most popular breakfast Delhi street foods. Nagori is a small, crisp and crumbly puri made with sooji, maida and ghee, paired with sooji halwa. The crisp poori stuffed with the soft, sweet and moist halwa is the perfect combination.
2. Gulab jamun
Gulab jamun is a classic Indian sweet made with milk solids, sugar, rose syrup & cardamom powder. This is now our favourite sweet dish in India that we have tried, and to us it tastes similar to a soft doughnut.
3. Daulat ki chaat
This dessert is only available during the winter season and melts in your mouth! This iconic dish is made up of milk that is mixed with cream and cooled over an ice slab overnight. After 8-10 hours of cooling, a portion of this is removed and whisked by hand until light and frothy. It is then blended with khoya and chenna, then topped with extra khoya and a pinch of a saffron mixture.
4. Chole Kulche
Chole Kulche is one of the main north Indian street food dishes you will find all over Delhi. It is basically curried chickpeas served with puffy fried bread - and delicious!
5. Aloo Mutter
Aloo mutter is a Punjabi dish made from potatoes and peas in a spiced creamy tomato based sauce. The sauce is generally cooked with garlic, ginger, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, cumin seeds and other spices. If you are looking for a vegetarian curry to try on the streets this is the one we recommend!
6. Special Irani Sheermal
Based on the special sheermal bread in Iran, Delhi has started to make their own twist on this delicious nutty bread. Similar to a thick naan, this sheermal is cooked in a tandoori oven, covered in nuts & butter.
7. Masala Chai
Masala Chai is a milky spiced black tea found all over India. Tea stalls are a common sight on the streets of Delhi, where they serve tea to people passing by. It is an integral part of life here in India, where you will be served tea at most restaurants and street vendors.
8. Jalebi
Jalebi is a sweet popular dish popular across South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and East Africa. It is made by deep-frying a wheat flour batter in pretzel or circular shapes, which are then soaked in sugar syrup.
9. Bhatura
This fluffy deep-fried bread is often eaten with chickpea curry, chole or channe. This dish was our go to basically every morning since we arrived here in India.
10. Fire Paan
Traditional paan usually comprises of a betel leaf stuffed with areca nut and occasionally tobacco which is chewed then spat out or swallowed. But a stall in Delhi has reinvented the traditional snack and has attracted hundreds of brave customers by lighting the paan on fire and placing it into their mouths.
