TOP 6 THINGS TO DO IN THE ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
If you are looking for the perfect destination for a family holiday, I think we have found it. This summer we spent a week in the Algarve here in Portugal with Stephen's family and had a trip of a lifetime. We enjoyed soaking in the sun, eating a lot of delicious Portuguese food and we could not get over the beauty of the area.

1. Kayak Through Caves in Lagos
If you only have time to do one thing during a visit to the Algarve it has to be going on a kayak tour along the coast. We spent the morning kayaking with Moments Watersports, heading to 4 or 5 caves and a number of secluded beaches. The coastline of the Algarve is one of the most stunning we have ever seen, and it is best experienced from the sea.
2. Ponta da Piedade
In the west, the Algarve comprises of stunning sandy beaches and towering cliffs, many which have been eroded and shaped by the powerful seas and wind. Along this breathtaking coastline one spot that can not be miss in Ponta da Piedade - considered to be the most beautiful natural feature in the area. The cliffs of the headland are carved into rock pillars, natural tunnels and hidden grottos.
There are coastal paths that cross the cliffs, the perfect place to have a morning walk.
3. Local Food Tour
On our final day here in the Algarve we decided to head out on a local Portuguese food tour with Algarve Foodie. We headed out to Faro market, a local gathering of fresh fish, veggies and cheeses. Exploring and making our way through the market we tried food that is essential for Algarve meals, goats cheese, black pig, fava beans and figs before trying some delicious prawns. Even though we tried Pastel de Nata up in Lisbon, we found a much tastier and more traditional way of eating them here - adding cinnamon on top.
We then headed out to a restaurant called Taska to try some dishes including: - arroz de lingueirao, xarem, ameijoas and muxama. Afterwards we explored the local town where we tried dom rodrigo, an algarvian sweet made with eggs, caramel, almonds and cinnamon before ending our trip with torta de laranja for desert.

4. Speed Boat to Benagil Cave
Benagil, a small fishing village on the southern coast of the Algarve has become one of the most famous spots in the area thanks to this incredible sea cave. The Benagil cave is one of the most impressive in Europe and has been listed in the world's " Top 10 Coolest Caves" by The Huffington Post.
As the tide and current change here so frequently, the safest way to get a close look is by going on a speed boat tour. We recommend checking out Moments Watersports for a tour. They will take you on a hour long speed boat ride heading out to a number of caves, including the most famous of them all - Benagil.
5. Local Cooking Class
We love tasting the local cuisine, and even more so learning how to cook a few dishes. During our time in the Algarve we went on a family cooking class with Taste Algarve and just - wow!
We started our day at a local farmers market to collect our fresh produce before heading to a picturesque farm to cook with a friendly local chef. We ended up learning how to cook a 3 course Algarvian lunch, which we then enjoyed together with views over the farmland.
6. Praia do Camilo
If you are looking for a beach to enjoy we highly recommend Praia do Camilo. It is iconic beach here in the Algarve and we can see why. With golden sand, crystal clear water and nearby caves to explore - it is the perfect beach to spend an entire day at.
To reach the beach you will need to walk down 200 wooden steps which wind their way down the side of the cliffs. But we should be grateful for these cliffs as they offer shelter from the winds which make it quite safe for swimming.
Where To Stay
During our time in the Algarve we stayed at the most beautiful Airbnb with our family. We stayed in a super affordable 3 bedroom house, equipped with a kitchen, lounge area and huge backyard with our own jacuzzi, BBQ and outdoor eating area! It is located in an area called Faro which we loved and a short drive away is grocery stores, the beach and the town of Faro.
