10 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO VISIT SONEVA JANI | THE BEST RESORT IN THE MALDIVES
Many of you may have seen a little viral video making the rounds of an incredible overwater bungalow in the middle of crystal blue waters with a futuristic retractable roof. Well, that video was a snippet from our recent stay at the breathtaking resort Soneva Jani in the Maldives.
We are sure that the video alone has already convinced you why you need to visit this incredible resort, but if not here are 10 reasons why you need to visit the best resort in the Maldives...
1. The Retractable Roofs
You may be wondering what could be so great about a roof that makes it as our very first reason to visit, but trust us, this resort has the coolest roof we have ever seen!
All villas in the resort feature a retractable roof in the master bedroom. With just a push of a magical button that is tucked away in a draw next to your bed, the roof opens up so you can lie in bed and either lounge in the sun or gaze up at the stars.
You may also have the same question we had - what about when it rains? There is no need to worry, since sensors detect any on-coming showers and automatically closes the roof!
2. The Beautiful Overwater Bungalows
The villa featured above is the one we stayed in, it was the smallest villa at the resort but also the biggest we have ever experienced.
Our two storey over water villa came with its own 13m long private pool, a huge outdoor deck, a spacious master bedroom and children's sleeping area, a kitchenette, study, walk-in wardrobe, and living room with a cool sunken seating area - but that's not all...
We also had a gorgeous open-air bathroom featuring a huge bathtub, two showers and a private entry way into the lagoon. The villa also had three glass-bottom areas to remind you that you are indeed sleeping above the water, and upstairs had a large dining table and beautiful views of the resort.
Honestly, no words can describe just incredible this overwater bungalow is!
3. The Lagoon
Soneva Jani is located on the island of Medhufaru, which is part of an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll. The resort has been built around a 5.6 km lagoon of crystal clear waters with 360° views of the Indian Ocean. The lagoon is so huge that more than 7,000 Olympic swimming pools can fit inside it!
4. The Chocolate & Ice-cream Room
Yes you read that right. The resort has it's very own chocolate & ice cream parlour - which means unlimited chocolate and ice-cream for all!
Each room is open from 12pm till late night and complimentary to all guests. You can choose from over sixty constantly changing flavours of homemade ice creams and sorbets and indulge in every child’s dream of never-ending chocolate - the diet can start once you leave, trust us no calories count here.
5. The Overwater Cinema
Soneva Jani features the Maldives’ first ever overwater silent cinema. Here, you can relax on comfortable loungers under the stars and snack on freshly popped popcorn, while you are provided with Bluetooth headphones, leaving the surrounding nesting turtles and wildlife at peace. Twice a week there is a movie selection for both children and adults, and private screenings and dining experiences can be arranged at an extra cost.
6. The Waterslides
Can you spot the waterslide above?
Some of the villas feature a huge water slide from the second floor straight into the Indian Ocean, however if you are like us and booked a smaller villa there is a waterslide for anyway to use located at the top floor of The Gathering building (where you will find restaurants and the famous chocolate and ice-cream room).
7. It's Environmental Efforts
Like all other Soneva resorts, sustainability is always a key feature. In constructing the resort, Soneva kept its environmental impact as low as possible. The pools use seawater with UV filtration and the villas have been built over the sandy floors of the lagoon, with no damage to any part of the reef. The resort also uses solar power as a significant source of power generation at the resort, all waste-water is collected and treated on-site, and water is also produced on-site, including drinking water!
8. The Staff
From the moment you touch down on Soneva Jani’s shores, your personal butler, called Mr. or Ms. Friday, will be on hand with a smile and assist you throughout your stay. These Fridays are obviously chosen very carefully as they are all so friendly and warm, giving guests such a high level of service we had never experienced before!
9. The Seaplane
To get to Soneva Jani you will need to catch a 40 minute seaplane transfer from Male Airport. The plane flies quite low over the Indian Ocean, offering an amazing view of the atolls and the tiny islands, turquoise lagoons and sapphire blue ocean below.
Also, landing at Soneva Jani International Airport is an experience in itself - it has got to be one of the smallest airports we have literally ever landed at! Made up of a small wooden floating deck just off the island’s shores, you are collected by speedboat and then whisked away to the resort.
10. The Delicious Food
The food at every Soneva resort is absolutely delicious. All meals we tried, be it in-room dining, buffet breakfast or an intimate dinner on the beach, were all at the hightest quality and presentation. You may want to check out our vlogs for mouth drooling examples of what we ate.
Flying The Nest was welcomed as a guest of Soneva Jani, however as always all opinions are our own.
