KUALA LUMPUR IN 24 HOURS: TOP THINGS TO SEE & DO

After visiting the KL international terminal way too many times, but never getting to explore further than the airport hotel, we finally had the opportunity to travel into the city. We only had 24 hours to see as much of Kuala Lumpur as we could, therefore we had to use our time wisely.

Here are our top things we recommend you see & do during a quick stop over in the incredible Malaysian city - Kuala Lumpur!

1. Spend the night at Traders Hotel

If you are only staying for one night than you need to book a well located hotel. We highly recommend checking into the Traders Hotel. It's situated directly across from the Petronas Towers giving you some incredible views of the towers and surrounding city. One of our favourite hotels here in South East Asia - it is definitely worth a visit.

2. Go up the Petronas Towers

A visit to Kuala Lumpur is not complete without checking out the Petronas Towers. They are especially beautiful at night when the towers are lit up with hundreds of lights & the water fountain out the front is lit up in a rainbow of colours.

You can also go up the towers, both to the observation deck at the 86th level (360 metres high) and to the bridge connecting the two towers. Just make sure you pre-book your tickets if you want to go up, we didn't know this before our visit and unfortunately couldn't experience it ourselves.

Ticket prices are 80 rm for adults & 30 rm for children. The towers are open 9am to 9pm every Tuesday to Sunday (closed every Monday & closed between 1pm-2.30pm every Friday).

3. Go shopping at Suria KLCC

This is a six story shopping centre that includes not only shops, but also rides, a cinema, a supermarket & and variety of dining options including food courts. On the top floor you can eat at Rasa food court which has freshly prepared food from all over Malaysia and a table near the window will give you great views over the city. In the basement you can find souvenirs and arts & crafts vendors selling items from their carts.

4. Explore the Batu Caves

Only 20 minutes outside of KL is the incredible Batu Caves. It is a massive cave temple that can not be missed during a visit to Kuala Lumpur. With wild monkeys running up its rock faced walls and birds flying in and out of the cave, it's a sight you will never forget.

You will have to walk 272 steps to get to the cave and there is no fee to enter. Just ensure you bring something to cover your shoulders and knees as it is a holy sight.

5.  See Kuala Lumpur from atop the Kuala Lumpur Tower

This tower stands at 335 meters and has an observation deck that offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Something unique about this towers is that they hold an annual race here where participants run to the top to promote health and fitness. The best time to visit here is during sunset, as you can watch the stunning colours of the sky as the sun disappears over the city and the Petronas Towers.

6. Like birds? Than you need to spend a day at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Spanning over 20 acres this enormous aviary is home to over 3000 birds! This is one of the largest local aviaries in the world, allowing visitors to come and learn about the local flora and fauna and of course bird watch. The park is also a well respected scientific location and there is a great emphasis here on conservation and education, with breeding programs and scientific studies of the birds in their natural habit.

7. Try the Street Food at Alor Street

Back in the day Alor Street was famous for being KL's red light district. If you visit today however, you will fine street vendors lining the streets as the sun begins to set selling delicious street food. The vendors here usually focus on selling one signature dish they have perfected over the years. Grab a dish you would like to try, and take a seat at one of the plastic tables & chairs for a street food experience.

8. Have a drink at the famous Sky Bar

Located high up on the 33rd floor of Traders is the famous Sky Bar. Here you can sip on a cocktail, listen to a DJ and enjoy amazing views of the Petrona Twin Towers from your very own cabana booth! They also have really good food here so we suggest coming at sunset to grab some dinner & enjoy the cool atmosphere.

9. Wander through Chinatown

Kuala Lumpur, in addition to Malay and Indian nationals, has a large Chinese population and therefore has a Chinatown. Located in and around Petaling Street, the area features a market, Chinese food options, and Chinese temples. The street food vendors that are set up here at night are very popular and worth a visit.
