SURFING, SKATING & TEACHING IN CAPE TOWN
During our travels through Cape Town (one of our most favourite cities in the world) we had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at a surf and adventure club for children from disadvantaged areas in Cape Town. The project's goal is to teach underprivileged children life lessons, keep them off the streets and have a safe place to go after school.
Also did we mention it's all set amongst the incredible backdrop of Table Mountain in the distance? We have to say this was one of the coolest places we have ever surfed at!
Teach, Surf, Skate
This was the first community project we had experienced that involved working with children outside of a classroom setting - which we loved! Our days started at 8.30am which would involve visiting the local schools in the townships and assisting with teachers and having some much needed one on one time with the students.
In the afternoons, once the children were done with school we could choose to teach them how to swim, skate or surf. Throughout the week we were also given surf lessons of our own which was such a unique way to learn to surf as it coincided with being able to volunteer at the same time.
Organising Volunteering Abroad
If you are interested in volunteering abroad we feel the best way to do this is with an organisation that can set you up with a project of your choice. We teamed up with GoEco who help people that want to volunteer abroad do just that. You simply tell them what kind of volunteering you are interested in experiencing and what country you would like to travel to and they will help find you your perfect project.
If you are interested in the volunteer project we experienced check out the Teach Children & Surf in Cape Town project with GoEco.
You can book your volunteer experience in Cape Town for $880 per person, for two weeks.
Have you ever volunteered abroad? We would love to read about your experience below.
Thank you to Go Eco for allowing us to experience this incredible volunteer project in Cape Town. Our opinion is, as always, our own..
