A WEEKEND IN WHISTLER

As spring begins to bloom here in Vancouver, we realised that we only have a short time left to experience the winter wonderland we know Canada has to offer. Where did we find this winter wonderland? Whistler, of course. Discover Canada Tours kindly invited us on a Weekend Whistler Adventure for 2 days of snow, adrenaline and nature. A 2 hour scenic drive along the Sea to Sky Highway will take you out of the hustle and bustle of Vancouver city and into the breathtaking landscapes of Whistler. Here is our experience.

The Village

When stepping into Whistler Village we realised this wasn't your average ski town. The village is unique because of the quaint buildings, filled with snow sport fanatics that like a drink or two after a day on the slopes. There are an abundant of shops, slope-side bars, cafes, restaurants and live music all surrounded by snow capped mountains.

Whistler Village

We were lucky enough to be in Whistler for their 20th annual World Ski & Snowboard Festival. The Village was full of different stalls giving away freebies and a huge stage was set up for outdoor concerts. This made our Saturday night an eventful one as we listened to live music while having a few drinks around the fire.

The Snow

Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America providing fresh snow, an amazing atmosphere and breathtaking views. Coming from the sunny beaches of Australia we are still getting the hang of the whole snow sport thing, which led us to spending our first day in Whistler learning to ski. We can now officially ski down (the beginners) slope without out too many bumps or bruises.

With over 8,100 acres of snow-covered slopes, 16 alpine bowls, 3 glaciers, world-class terrain parks and half pipes and 200+ marked trails for all ability levels and newly updated lifts, Whistler Blackcomb is the ultimate snow destination for any ability level.

The Food

A visit to Whistler simply wouldn't be complete without trying some local cuisine. If you are wanting to warm up we suggest a nice, hot bowl of Poutine or for the sweet tooth go for a Beaver Tail. Head to Zog’s in Whistler Village for both of these Canadian dishes.

The Hotel

The Coast Blackcomb Suites is located ski-in, ski-out on Blackcomb Mountain. It offers a unique lodge-style setting, with complimentary breakfast, fully equipped kitchens, gas fireplaces and daily housekeeping all included in your stay. Our favourite thing about this hotel is the huge outdoor pool and hot tubs. You can relax your muscles after a day of hitting the slopes, surrounded by scenery straight out of Narnia.

The Hikes

One of the Discover Canada guides told us about a beautiful hike that led to a huge lake named Lost Lake. We decided to wake up early on the Sunday morning and go check it out for ourselves. Ironically, we did get lost while on the search for Lost Lake, but eventually we found it in the end and what a beautiful lake it was.

Hike Whistler

We highly recommend if you ever find yourself in Whistler to leave some time for some nature walks. There are a number of trails throughout Whistler from easy, cement pathways to rugged, rocky climbs for the more adventurous.

The Bungee

Speaking about adventurous, if it is adventure that you are after then why not try bungee jumping right here in Whistler. We have previously been parasailing, paragliding and even skydiving, and we thought it was time to conquer our most feared adrenaline activity. Stephen made the jump look like a piece of cake, myself on the other hand was a nervous wreck. But I over came my fears, closed my eyes and jumped. Would you be up for the challenge?

Bungee Whistler
