WICKED MUSICAL REVIEW
With all the travel news we have been posting from our recent trips we realised that it had been quite some time since our last theatre musical review. For our second dabble into the musical arts we decided to follow up with a personal favourite of Jess's - Wicked, the Broadway Musical.
For those who are aren't familiar with Wicked it is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, but rather than retreading the steps of little baby Dorothy and a puppy version of ToTo we instead follow the life of Elphaba aka The Wicked Witch of the West, aka the villain.

Wicked Broadway Review
We have to just put it out there - we love sequels, prequels or anything that expands on a movie or universe that shows us more of our favourite characters. Wicked is the perfect example of not only taking what you already know but flipping it upside down and giving you a very unique tale.
Most of the musicals that we have seen were based on pre-existing tales and included songs that we already knew off by heart. We walked into the theatre with a blank mind and no idea what the story would be about. If you enjoy memorable songs that will be in your head for days afterwards, this is the next best thing until Frozen gets its' imminent broadway debut.
We saw this production in Australia at our local theatre which meant this scaled back Broadway version used TV personalities and upcoming actors that you have seen but can't put a finger on where. However, the stellar cast of "they're from that TV special remember?" were fantastic none-the-less and made it all seem so easy that we were inspired to sign up for drama classes.
Without spoiling to much the production gives just enough nods from The Wizard of Oz to make you enjoy your walk down memory lane. The set pieces from around the land of Oz were interesting, fresh and never overstayed their welcome. If you enjoy the set and costumes aspects of musicals, you won't be disappointed here.

End Note
We always try to recommend someones first broadway musical to be based on a movie they love (such as Mamma Mia or The Lion King) but the unique story, memorable songs and interesting spin on an iconic tale easily makes Wicked a play to recommend. Next time it comes through your town we highly suggest you buy a ticket.
