11 REASONS YOU SHOULD TRAVEL WHILE YOU'RE YOUNG

11. Travelling teaches you to live an adventure

When you look back on your life will you remember the things you did or didn't do? Live life as the adventure that it is!

"And then I realised adventures was the best way to learn"

10. Travelling helps you decide what you want in life

Many find it difficult to decide what they want in life. Travelling while young can be a great way to diversify your experience early in life and to discover what is your purpose in life. Travel can open your mind to new possibilities. Travelling takes you outside of your comfort zone, helps you appreciate what you have at home or helps you realise you want something different.

9. Travelling with fewer attachments = more freedom

As we grow, we begin to make big, adult decisions such as get a mortgage, a car loan and have a few kids. Travelling before this time of your life will make it much easier and give you more freedom to explore the world. Yes, you may have a student loan or a boyfriend/girlfriend. So what? They should still be there when you get back. If you have responsibilities now imagine how bogged down you will be in the future! Take the opportunity while you are still a young soul.

8. Travelling teaches you to appreciate what you have

When you see a family of 12 living under one roof eating plain rice for dinner or shoeless children laughing and playing in open fields, it will help you appreciate how lucky we are to have a home and warm clothes to go back to. Similarly, it will allow you to realise that happiness does not come from materialistic things, but in relationships with each other and the world around us.

7. Travelling allows you to develop independence and how to be responsible

Catching flights, keeping track of passports and navigating foreign-speaking cities, can force you to think on your feet and make decisions quickly.

6. Travelling empowers you to take on new challenges

Travelling can be empowering. You will realise you can do things you never thought possible. It can give you the opportunities to conquer your fears! Go for it and take on new challenges that are thrown your way!

5. Travelling will allow you to gain some culture

Be it a different way of living, religion, or outlook on life, when you travel you will be exposed to different cultures that can have a huge impact on your life. Being exposed to diversity at a young age, will change the way you see the world. The best thing to come from experiencing new cultures is learning how to see things from a different perspective - every culture, and every person is different.

"It will allow you to teach you to embrace and not fear new experiences"

4. Travelling teaches you empathy and compassion

Travelling will change you. It will put you in places that will force you to care for issues greater than your own. You may encounter things that will break your heart. It will open your eyes to the pain and suffering that over half the world takes for granted on a daily basis. You will learn to care - use this new found empathy and compassion to do good in the world and help those less fortunate.

3. Travelling will teach you how to manage your money early in life

Many find difficulty in managing money (ourselves included). Travelling serves as a great lesson to managing your finances. If you give yourself no limits and spend thoughtlessly, you will see its huge impact on your travels. There is nothing worse than running out of money whilst on the road. Therefore, you will quickly learn how to manage your money whilst seeing the world and this will benefit you later in life.

2. Travelling allows you to enjoy life experiences now

"You are never guaranteed old age, so enjoy life's experiences now!"

Many young people I know put off travelling because they want to be responsible, work hard, get married, have kids and build up a life. However, I feel it is a mistake thinking it is okay to "put off travelling while you're young as you will have all the time in the world when you retire". Of course I plan to continue travelling after I retire, but I also know that you are never guaranteed old age. Travelling gives me the comfort in knowing that if I don't live to see my forties, fifties or sixties, at least I will have no regrets and feel as though I lived a full life.

In all it's cheesy-ness, don't forget YOLO

1. Travelling will make you a fuller, better person

During your life you are influenced by all that you have experienced, and what you are currently experiencing will influence your future experiences. If we travel while we are young we realise what we could of missed out on if we left it too late. "You don't know what you don't know" - and if you don't know what you're missing then you'll have less of a desire to ever travel. Once you see it, you will have a deeper appreciation and obligation to see what our beautiful planet has to offer.
