4. Aokigahara Forest, Japan

At the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan lies the densely wooded Aokigahara Forest - also known as the "Sea of Trees" or the "Suicide Forest." The forest has a historic association with demons and is a popular place for suicides, with an average of 100 suicides per year. As the woods are so dense it is likely that not all the bodies have been discovered. A number of signs surround the forest urging those that enter to reconsider their actions.

To add to the eeriness, the magnetic iron in the soil renders compasses useless and the wind-blocking density of the trees and an absence of nearly all wildlife make the forest exceptionally quiet. Would you want to spend the scariest night of the year camping out in this forest?

3. Island of the Dolls, Mexico

Looking for something a little more spookier? Then you need to visit the Island of the Dolls in Mexico. The island is literally covered in more then 1500 old, decapitated dolls. The island was once the property of Don Julian Santana, legend has it that in 1950 he saw a little girl down in the canal and her spirit began haunting the place. Santana began to collect dolls to protect himself from her ghost and began to hang them around the island like creepy Christmas ornaments. The oldest doll is still there, hanging in a shed by the entrance.

In 2001, Santana died of a heart attack and his cousin now lives on the island running it as a tourist attraction. "The spirit of the little girl is still here,” he says. “It’s important not to remove the dolls.” At night, he says, they come alive. “They will move their heads and whisper to each other. It’s very spooky, but I have gotten used to it.” Spooky, huh?
